Philter ‘Caribbean Stout’ (Foreign Extra Stout) – Marrickville, NSW

The anticipation for this beer was immense. Philter’s Red Session Ale has become my ‘go to’ cooler month beer and I love Foreign Extra Stout. Don’t get me wrong, a big chocolatey, boozey, complex stout has its place, but sometimes something just a little lighter is required. Made in small amounts I was lucky enough to pick up one from @lugarnocellars on the weekend and sat back and enjoyed on Monday night.

Can. Pours deep black with a frothy mocha head that fades relatively quickly. Aromas of tropical fruits and citrus flower hops, along with vanilla, a touch of coffee and hints of chocolate and coconut. Well balanced flavours that somehow walk a tightrope of light tropical hops, with a roasty background, vanilla, toffee and chocolate. Perhaps a touch overcarbonated, but probably to style. Thoroughly enjoyed this one and will hopefully be able to pick up a few more.
