Akasha ‘Water Buffalo’ (American Brown Ale) – Five Dock, NSW
This, my friends is quite simply the best brown ale going around. I’ve consulted my notes over the past five years and the Akasha Water Buffalo is top of my 32 strong brown ale pile. Is there better in the world? Maybe, but I haven’t tried it. I’m usually one to champion English styles, but in the case of brown ales, I love the American interpretation, full of complexity and intrigue. Dan, our Canberra correspondent tells me it’s sold out in the nations capital, so get in quick and try this cracker before it’s limited season is over until next Autumn.
Can. Deep cola colour, with a thin cream head. Aromas of dark chocolate, hints of espresso, toasted nuts and floral hops. Moderate to heavy grapefruit and pine bitterness throughout, counterbalanced with a rich, smooth mouthfeel of roasted malts, dark chocolate, hints of coffee, nuts and an earth and grass hop finish. Wonderfully balanced and a great beer.
